Seven songs from five animated features are among the 42 songs announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as eligible for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
They include "One Little Slip," by the Toronto-based Barenaked Ladies. The song was used in the Disney film Chicken Little.
Also eligible is Carly Simon's "Shoulder to Shoulder," from another Disney picture, Pooh's Heffalump Movie.
Three-time Oscar nominee Bryan Adams was named for "It Ain't Over Yet," which he wrote for the partly-animated Racing Stripes. Vancouver-based Adams had been nominated for his work on the live-action films Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (for which he won a Grammy), Don Juan DeMarco and The Mirror Has Two Faces.
"Taking the Inside Rail," another song from Racing Stripes, is also eligible for an Oscar nomination.
Rounding out the eligible list are the Robotssongs "Shine" and "Tell Me What You Already Did," as well as "Remains of the Day," from Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.
No songs from the film of "Rent" were considered eligible for Oscar nomination. This is because, according to Academy rules, songs must have been written specifically for the movie. However, "There's Nothing Like a Show on Broadway," from The Producers, is eligible for nomination, as Mel Brooks wrote it for the motion picture.
Nominations for the 78th Academy Awards (including five final choices for Best Original Song) will be announced January 31 at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The Academy Awards will be presented March 5 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
