China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 762.HK) CDMA1X wireless value added service subsidiary Unicom NewSpace will start broadcasts of 3D animated cartoon series "Jing Ling Shi Ji" on its handset movie channel this month, reports Guangdong News. The series was produced by Beijing Longma Entertainment International (LMEI). China Unicom users can watch the animated series on 3G handsets. According to China Unicom, the cartoon required an investment of 150 million to produce. According to LMEI COO Zhang Fan, each of the 104 episodes cost 360,000 Yuan to produce, and it will take four to five years to recover the investment. As TV stations are paying low licensing fees [for cartoons], Zhang expects broadcasts on the Internet and via handsets to become more mainstream.
