WITTYWORLD'S DIRECTORY OF International Cartoon Festivals, Competitions, and Awards
Cartoon competitions and festivals have been springing up in every corner of the world. From small exhibitions accommodating 50 artworks to large shows with hundreds--some-times over a thousand--cartoons on display, there is a wide variety of events boosting interest in cartoons and satirical art.
Some of these festivals - the most popular word used for these show/competition combinations - work with substantial capital and a big apparatus; others are operating on a shoestring budget and their exhibition is no bigger than the size of a classroom. The awards also vary. Cash prizes are offered from $200 to $25,000, the average festivals putting up awards worth around a couple of thousand dollars. Some give no awards, but organize symposia for professionals and mount prestigious shows attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. While some organizations are known for drawing in the public, others are better known for attracting artists and cartoonists.
WittyWorld has researched and found over 150 cartoon festivals, competitions, and awards in 41 countries that held at least one event, but some of which now may be defunct or on hold. Many of these festivals or award-giving bodies operate only for a few weeks or months each year or two. Most are inefficient in providing the latest information in a timely manner. Therefore we also use other sources to track down all relevant information and to complement data already available. However, contacting a festival for its latest brochure before entering a competition is always recommended. Some of the information are incomplete in their current form. Please bear with us while we are working on bringing each and every entry completely up to date.
